AOOS engages Alaskan students in marine science through internships, mentorships, and educational programs like ANSEP, K-8 curriculum, and the Barrow Arctic Research Center Science Fair. Staff members also provide career presentations, mentorship for high school juniors, and support for programs encouraging young women in science.

Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program

AOOS provides salary support for ANSEP interns through the Summer Bridge and University Success programs, which provide college students the opportunity to work directly with scientists. AOOS also engages with students from across Alaska through ANSEP’s K-8 Academy

Backyard Buoys

AOOS collaborates with PacIOOS and NANOOS to develop curriculum related to waves, wave data, maritime safety, and Indigenous knowledge of the ocean and weather. AOOS staff teach this curriculum to students through the ANSEP program and the annual Barrow Arctic Research Center Science Fair

Sheyna Wisdom, mentors high school juniors through the ASD Gifted Mentorships program. She also gives presentations about marine science careers for all ages at Anchorage schools, including drone and marine biology classes at Dimond High School. Joni Spiess was a Speed Mentor for the Career readiness program at West High School.
