Yup’ik Buoys and Drifters
Using Yup’ik knowledge to deploy wave buoys and ocean sensors
Nalaquq, LLC is a subsidiary of Qanirtuuq Incorporated, an Alaskan Native-owned ANCSA 14(h) corporation in Quinhagak. The organization creates community-driven solutions that integrate Indigenous knowledge across co-production research, community-based training, cultural resource management, and remote sensing.
Nalaquq will deploy wave buoys and drifting sensors in Kuskowkim Bay to provide real-time marine data to the communities of Goodnews Bay, Quinhagak, Eek, and Kongiganak. Data will be accessible by cellphone and GPS units, supporting daily travel by small vessels and assisting first responders during rescue missions. The project also offers insights into ocean conditions near important subsistence areas.
