Environmental monitoring by commercial fishermen in Southeast Alaska

Skipper Science is a community-driven environmental monitoring program that partners with commercial fishermen, scientists, researchers, and other stakeholders to collect ecological observations from those on the water. An extension of the Indigenous Sentinels Network, Skipper Science offers a smartphone app that allows fishermen to record real-time observations, strengthening relationships between coastal resource managers and ocean users. In addition to general ecosystem observations, skippers also collect specific data such as interactions with the fishing fleet and seabirds and examining the feeding habits of fish species.

Skipper Science – Call For Participants
The Skipper Science Partnership facilitates marine ecosystem data collection by fishermen through a smartphone app, connecting real-time data collected by mariners with shared priorities in fisheries science, management, policy, and climate resiliency strategies. The partnerships works with fishing fleets statewide and is supported through network of tribal, state, non- profit, and industry partners supporting Alaska’s unique and marine environment and fisheries.
