New Tool Provides Maps of Tidal Benchmarks

May 22, 2026

AOOS, through the Alaska Water Level Watch (AWLW), partnered with JOA Surveys to develop a new ArcGIS Online Historic Tidal Benchmark Map for Alaska. This publicly accessible tool provides users with an interactive map of historic tidal benchmark locations and direct access to associated benchmark sheets that are not currently available through NOAA Tides & Currents.

The map was developed to improve access to historic coastal surveying and water level reference information for researchers, coastal managers, surveyors, and community stakeholders. The project included planning, design, development, and implementation of the map for integration with the AWLW website.

This tool helps support broader coastal hazards, water level, and geodetic efforts across Alaska by making historic benchmark information more discoverable and easier to access.
