Madison Haumschild
Alaska Sea Grant Fellow
Harmful Algal Blooms
Data Management
Madison began serving as the AK State Sea Grant Fellow for AOOS in September of 2026. She is assisting in a project to monitor harmful algal blooms using Imaging FlowCytobots (IFCBs), which continuously sample seawater to detect individual planktonic organisms. Madison is planning and helping with IFCB deployments and monitoring and analyzing data from the devices, along with other data management projects and duties. She is near completion of her M.S. thesis work at UAA, which focuses on mercury contaminants in adult female and pup grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). Prior to and throughout her graduate degree, she worked with USDA Wildlife Services to prevent bird and wildlife strikes at the Anchorage International Airport. Before moving to Alaska in 2022, Madison completed her B.S. in Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she studied the phytoremediation abilities of plants contaminated with heavy metals. Madison spends her free time reading, crafting, and hiking with her dog Gus.
